On Sept. 10 is scheduled to start deliveries mainframe zEnterprise System - the most high-performance commercial systems of IBM for the history of the company. Basic server family zEnterprise System, known as zEnterprise 196, contains 96 microprocessors z196.
According to IBM, z196 - the fastest microprocessor in the world. Operating at a frequency of 5.2 GHz, it is able to perform more than 50 billion instructions per second. This is approximately 17000 times greater than the speed of the popular Model 1991 family of IBM System/360, released in 1970.
Quad-z196 contains 1.4 billion transistors on a substrate area of 512 sq.mm. He worked at IBM and is available on 45-nanometer processor technology, SOI («silicon on insulator) on their own production company.
The special features of the processor is an IBM-patented technology embedded memory DRAM (embedded DRAM or eDRAM), allows to place a dynamic cache of high-density on the same chip as the processor cores, thereby increasing overall system performance.
Technology zEnterprise was a result of more than polutoramilliardnyh IBM investment in research and development. The new system is 60% more powerful than its predecessor, the mainframe System z10, with approximately the same power consumption.
Record performance shown by a processor, claimed to organizations managing demanding workloads, such as banks and retailers - especially against the background of how the world becomes increasingly interconnected, data volumes are growing faster than the world's storage resources, and continues to rapidly increase number of business transactions.
